'Elan Ministries Board visits Marais!

This last weekend members of the 'Elan Ministries board visited the garden. They have been supportive of our garden endeavor since day one. Some of the board members are from our neighborhoods and others travel in from out of state. We are thankful for their time, their commitment, and their continual encouragement! Below you'll see a few shots of us taking a stroll around the garden.

Tomato Sauce from Your Summer Harvest!

If you're like us you love cherry tomatoes right off the vine on a warm summer day. There's nothing sweeter! There comes a time, however, in our garden when the number of tomatoes available is more than we can eat just plucking and snacking. This summer we tried out a very simple 5 minute cherry tomato sauce recipe. (see below)The sauce is great with chicken and pasta or could be frozen and later used as a sauce for pizza or a base for soup! Even our 4H Clover Buds couldn't devour the plentiful harvest! Here's the recipe, borrowed from My Family Table ,a cookbook by Chef John Besh. 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 2 quarts ripe cherry tomatoes (any color you have! ) Leaves from 3 sprigs of basil 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flake 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste Heat oil in large, deep skillet over high heat until hot. I recently attended a vermicompost workshop at HollyGrove Market and Farm led by the lovely Lena Tenenbaum. Vermicompost is simply another form of composting with the inclusion of worms.Lena has a love for worms and shared valuable information. One of the first things she said to the group with a smile on her face, "Worms are amazing, they breathe through their skin. So, it is important that we wet our hands before touching them." Why is it that keeping a colony of worms on our homestead is a great idea? There are numerous reasons,one of the most beneficial being the waste that they produce after eating your kitchen scraps. Many gardeners refer to it as black gold. I'm not sure if these red wigglers are Saints fans, but they are surely on the defense for your home garden.
